June 14 Applying MOM 2005 Hotfixes to MOM AgentsCheck out KB934507 prior to Applying MOM 2005 Hotfixes that involve Updates to your MOM Agents Thanks to Stuart Renes for this interesting factoid on MOM 2005… Many fixes to MOM 2005 require patches to the MOM agents themselves. This is done using a remote patch deployment utility, triggered from the MOM DAS server. After trying unsuccessfully to install several MOM 2005 patches (notably 922640, 926681 and 913812), we now have a fix (934507). The problem that KB923507 fixes is that in processing the patches the MOM DAS attempts to retrieve the patch GUID (that can be later used to apply the patch). There is a revision number property that is queried to retrieve this info. That property can contain more than just the GUID for the patch. For example, it can also contain the GUIDs of patches that it supersedes or obsoletes. Prior to the fix 934507, the MOM DAS was calling the API to retrieve the patch GUID using a fixed buffer (and not taking into account that there could be more than one GUID stored), thus the "error more data" error condition was being generated. This is now handled correctly by dynamically allocating the buffer as needed. So the morale of this story is that if you ever want to apply MOM 2005 hotfixes that involve updates to your MOM agents, you should first obtain and apply 934507 to all your MOM DAS servers. This will allow the application of multiple agent hotfixes to succeed. Have fun learn MOM!!
