May 21 Putting a computer into Maintenance Mode in Ops Mgr 2007Putting a Computer into Maintenance Mode in Ops Manager 2007 Putting a computer into maintenance mode in MOM 2005 used to be simple but a lot of this simplicity caused frustration in other areas due to the inability to make more granular maintenance mode configurations such as putting an individual web site into maintenance mode. In Operations Manager 2007 it is important to remember that if a computer is in maintenance mode this does not necessarily mean that the monitoring infrastructure is in maintenance mode. This is due to the fact that the agent health service will still be monitoring other things on the system which means that if the health service goes into an unhealthy state an alert will still be generated. To put an entire machine into maintenance mode you need to perform the following three steps:

May 17 Backing up RMS keysBacking up Your RMS Keys After the successful installation of your Operations Manager 2007 database and Root Management Server (RMS) components, it is recommended for disaster recovery planning (DRP) reasons that you back up the keys on the RMS. The tool provided by Microsoft to do this is found in the SupportTools folder on the Operations Manager 2007 media and is the securestoragebackup.exe utility.
To backup the RMS keys perform the following steps: 1. Insert the OpsMgr 2007 media into the CD/DVD drive on the RMS server. 2. Open a Command Prompt and navigate to the <DVD drive>:\SupportTools 3. Type to command securestoragebackup.exe backup backup c:\rmskey.bin and hit Enter, where c:\ in the location where you wish to store the key and where rmskey.bin is the name of the file. 4. At the prompt, provide a password and then re enter the password to confirm it. 5. The end result should be a message indicating “Key successfully backed up to c:\Rmskey.bin. Optional Result6. In lieu of a success message, should you receive the message “Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Mom.Common, Version=6.0.4900.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.” perform the following steps to resolve this issue. 7. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007 and locate the file Microsoft.Mom.Common.dll. 8. Open a second instance of Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\Assembly. 9. Right click the Assembly directory and select Properties. Remove the read only attribute and click OK. 10. Drag the file Microsoft.Mom.Common.dll from the C:\Program Files\System Center Operations Manager 2007 directory and drop it in the C:\Windows\Assembly directory. 11. Close both instances of Windows Explorer. 12. Rerun step 3 above. Have fun, learn Ops Mgr!! Check out the instructor led training at www.systemcentertraining.com.
May 14 Viewing resultant set of rulesHow do I view the resultant set of rules on an Operations Manager 2007 agent?
Viewing the resultant set of rules was something that was possible in MOM 2005 using the Resultant Set of Rules (rsor.exe) MOM 2005 Resource Kit Tool. The command to do this is:
rsor This created a new directory called Resultant Set of Rules on the root of the C: drive where you ran the tool and a text file that contained the output. There is a great blog post on how to accomplish this same result in Operations Manager 2007 at http://www.it-jedi.net/2007/03/returning-resultant-set-of-rules-in-ops.html, check it out!

Promoting an RMSAre you interested in promoting an existing Management Server to a Root Management Server (RMS). If so, you will want to become familiar with the ManagementServerConfigTool.exe. This is the tool you use to perform the promotion and subsequent demotion.
To promote an existing Management Server copy the ManagementServerConfigTool from the SupportTools directory on the CD image into the install directory and run:
ManagementServerConfigTool.exe PromoteRMS /DeleteExistingRMS:true
This will setup the local machine as an RMS and remove the other machine from the RMS role in the database. If you leave the original RMS running the Config Service will complain loudly which is expected.
